Objective : To describe frequency and type of comorbid conditions in asthma patients refered to an outpatient asthma clinic.
Design: Observational analytic studyin a retrospective cohort
Setting: Hospital Santa Clara, Bogotá.
Patients and Methods: Asthmatic patients older than 14 years refered to the outpatient asthma clinic during a 18 months period. Information was collected in a retrospective fashion, with emphasis in demographic descriptors, reason to referal, previous asthma management, asthma severity and co-morbid conditions.
Results: During the study period 125 patients (23% males, mean age 48 years) were refered to the asthma clinic. 82% out of 125 patients had co-morbid conditions in adition to asthma, in order of frequency rhinitis (57%), sinusitis (21%) and systemic hypertension (13%). Subjective and objective asthma severity was similar between groups with or without co-morbid conditions, but in patients with rhinitis or sinusitis we observed a higher but non significant increase in the frequency of oral corticosteroids prescription.
Conclusions: Difficult to control asthmatic patients referred to the outpatient clinic frequently suffer comorbid conditions. Management of this patients requiere more knowledge, skills, expertise and resources, specially oriented toward co-morbid conditions of the upper respiratory tract.
