The hydrogen ion has the ability to quickly interact with different molecules in the body, as well as with enzymes and receptors in biochemical reactions. It is responsible for regulating their concentration in different compartments of the body. Work done by Stewart has shown that hydrogen ion homeostasis in acid-base disorders does not depend on it and / or on the exchange with bicarbonate to buffer the deficit or excess, but it becomes a variable dependent on
other factors for its regulation in each compartment. This validates the importance of the presence of weak acids, while maintaining the influence of CO2 and highlighting the ability of strong ion as the main determinant in the concentration of H +, and thus explains the causes of variations in pH in humans.
