El cigarrillo electrónico es un dispositivo electrónico capaz de liberar nicotina y algunas otras sustancias toxicas y carcinogénicas, sin embargo, existen dispositivos que no generan nicotina llamados Sistemas Electrónicos Sin Suministro de Nicotina (SSSN). Fue creado en el 2003 en China y posteriormente se ha ido comercializando en el resto del mundo, con diferentes generaciones y marcas del dispositivo. En realidad, existe una falsa percepción frente a este cigarrillo, porque no se ve expuesto a los efectos dañinos que tiene el cigarrillo de tabaco, lo que aumenta su uso en población adolescente quienes además se ven atraídos por la forma, los saborizantes y el color del dispositivo, volviéndolo incluso más aceptado socialmente. Además, existen países que aún no cuentan con políticas y normas para la comercialización del cigarrillo electrónico; razón por la cual el uso de este dispositivo es cada vez mayor. El dispositivo se comercializa con la idea de que es una herramienta eficaz para dejar de fumar, pero en realidad faltan estudios que avalen dicha información. Es muy importante que los usuarios de dichos dispositivos conozcan y sean conscientes de las enfermedades atribuibles a los compuestos tóxicos de los cigarrillos electrónicos. Este artículo es una adaptación del trabajo de grado presentado para la Maestría en Drogodependencia de la autora.
