Osteoporosis, fracturas vertebrales e hipercifosis en la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica

La enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) es una condición frecuente con repercusiones sistémicas, dentro de las que se encuentra la osteoporosis. Las fracturas vertebrales derivan del compromiso de la masa ósea y promueven la aparición de deformidades vertebrales. La hipercifosis es una de las alteraciones más frecuentes del segmento dorsal de la columna y le impone a quien la padece un impacto negativo sobre su capacidad funcional general. La sobreposición EPOC/hipercifosis podría modificar el curso clínico del enfermo respiratorio debido a que puede causar mayor compromiso de la mecánica respiratoria y la función pulmonar. La información acerca de esta sobreposición sigue siendo poca. Es necesario realizar estudios para determinar la prevalencia de las deformidades de la columna vertebral en pacientes con EPOC y su impacto real en la función pulmonar y en el curso clínico de la enfermedad.
