Objective: To describe the clinical and spirometric characteristics of patients admitted in a management program of the COPD in Bogotá.

Material and method: A cross-sectional study. 756 patients with presumptive diagnosis of COPD were remitted to program, 408 (54%) were confirmed by spirometry, 57 of which were excluded. Information from 351 patients was collected on demographic, clinical and paraclinical characteristics and their relations with the COPD severity were described.

Statistical Analysis: Descriptive statistics were used for characterizing patients. The parametric coefficient of Pearson and the non-parametric coefficient of Spearman were used under a level of significance of 1% (p<0.01).

Results: COPD defined by a FEV1/FVC ratio< 70% post-bronchodilator was confirmed in 54% of the patients; only data from COPD patients were used for the analysis. Mean age was 72,8 ±9 and 61% were men; 9% were current smokers, 33% reported to have been exposed to wood smoke and 69% used the inhalators incorrectly. Approximately 68% of patients were not vaccinated for preventing pneumococcal infection and the 46% were not vaccinated against influenza.

The average VEF1 was 1.285±517 liters. Direct and significant correlation was found between the VEF1 (%) with PaO2 saturation and the body mass index, and an inverse significant correlation was found between the VEF (%) and the PCO2, hematocrit and dyspnea index. No significant correlation was found between the VEF1 (%) and the quality of life (S. George) and the 6 minutes walk test.

Conclusions: The 54% of patients remitted to program were adequately diagnosed. We found poor compliance with influenza and pneumococcal vaccination and inadequate use of inhaler devices among COPD. We stress the importance of spirometry as a basic tool to confirm the diagnosis of COPD and recommends different strategies such as educative programs to improve COPD management.
