Wilfredy Castaño Ruiz

The fifth TNM Classification of malignant tumours introduced in 1997, was developed with a database with 5319 patients of a single geographic area. The sixth version didn´t made changes in Lung Cancer staging. With evidence of a important rise in new cases and the high mortality of this disease, we need a new classification system with a better accuracy for the prognosis of Lung Cancer patients. The international association for the study of lung cancer (IASLC), collected 68.463 patients with nonsmall cell lung cancer and 13.032 patients with small cell lung cancer between 1990 and 2000. In the new organizational system, reclassifications were made for T and M descriptors, and staging depending by the survival found. The proposed changes better differentiate tumors of different prognoses.
