Pulmonary hypereosinophilia comprises a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by pulmonary infiltrates and increased levels of eosinophils and inflammatory cells (such as macrophages, lymphocytes, and neutrophils) in peripheral blood and/or lung tissue. At later stages, these cells are responsible for pulmonary injury. In these conditions, the presence of eosinophils is of capital importance, and is a useful marker for diagnosis, follow-up, and treatment. Clinical and radiologic presentation is usually variable, and can sometimes run together with other concomitant diseases such as asthma, which can be a requisite for the appearance of conditions such as allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and Churg-Strauss syndrome. This review examines each presentation of the eosinophilic lung syndrome on the basis of its epidemiologic, clinical, and radiologic characteristics.
