      Si bien las campañas y las leyes actuales han llegado a disminuir de manera importante el consumo de cigarrillo, la incidencia de cáncer pulmonar sigue siendo elevada, situación que pone al tabaquismo pone en el rango de problema de salud pública.
      Es así como el número de fumadores de sexo masculino ha disminuido y en la misma forma el número de fumadores femeninos se ha venido incrementando, así las cifras se han compensado para definir un mismo rango de incidencia.
      De otro lado la poca efectividad de las campañas contra el tabaco, así como la de los programas para dejar de fumar, además de no ser fácilmente aceptadas por los pacientes, resultan ser medidas de prevención poco prácticas y efectivas, no queriendo decir con esto que se deban abandonar, si no por el contrario, tomar acciones con el fin de fortificarlas y hacerlas de mayor cubrimiento poblacional.
