Puede definirse un aerosol como un sistema de partículas liquidas o sólidas de diámetro suficientemente pequeño para mantenerse estables como una suspensión en el aire. Los aerosoles líquidos se conocen como vapor y los aerosoles de partículas sólidas se conocen como polvos'*.
La mayoría de los aerosoles contienen un amplio rango de tamaño de partículas. Es importante caracterizar un aerosol en términos de la distribución por tamaños de las partículas así como la concentración de su masa para estimar dosis total y regional depositada.Si se hace una distribución logarítmica de un aerosol con base en su masa y se registra sobre un papel de probabilidad, usualmente esta distribución se aproxima a una línea recta. Dos valores se deducen de esta distribución. El diámetro aerodinámico de masa media (MMAD) y la desviación estándar geométrica (GSD). El MMAD describe el diámetro de una partícula (usualmente en micras) alrededor del cual la suspensión está igualmente dividida por masa; es decir que la mitad de la masa total de partículas es mayor que el MMAD y la otra mitad es inferior, y es el parámetro único más importante que gobierna el depósito de una partícula. La GSD describe la variabilidad de la partícula con relación al MMAD y es la relación entre el diámetro por debajo del cual reside el 84.3% de la masa total del aerosol sobre el MMAD; teniendo en cuenta que es una relación este parámetro no tiene unidades.
